USB-C has become the standard connector across phones, laptops, and accessories, helped along by regulations like the EU's common-charger rule. That's genuinely convenient — one cable shape fits almost everything now. But the shape being standardized doesn't mean the capability behind it is, and that's where a lot of confusion, and a few disappointing purchases, comes from.
USB-C refers to the physical connector — the reversible oval shape. It says nothing on its own about how fast a cable can transfer data or how much power it can carry. A budget charging cable and a high-end Thunderbolt cable can use the exact same connector while performing very differently.
Check the listed wattage and data speed rather than assuming from the connector shape, buy from brands that clearly publish specs, and keep a couple of higher-spec cables specifically for tasks like fast charging a laptop or transferring large files, rather than assuming any USB-C cable in a drawer will do.
