A few years ago, "AI features" on your phone almost always meant your data was sent off to a remote server, processed, and sent back. That's starting to change. New phones and laptops increasingly run AI models directly on the device itself, using dedicated chips built specifically for the job.
Most modern flagship phones and recent laptops now include a neural processing unit (NPU) — a chip component designed specifically to run AI workloads efficiently, separate from the main processor. This is what allows tasks like live translation, photo enhancement, and voice transcription to happen instantly, without needing an internet connection at all.
For the largest, most demanding AI models — the kind used for complex reasoning or generating long-form content — cloud data centers still have far more computing power than any single device can match. Expect a hybrid approach for a while yet: quick, everyday tasks handled on-device, and heavier tasks still routed to the cloud when needed.
If on-device AI features matter to you, check for a dedicated NPU in the spec sheet rather than judging by marketing terms alone — the actual chip and its capability vary a lot between devices even when both are advertised as "AI-ready."
It means the AI model runs directly on your phone's or laptop's own chip, instead of sending your request to a remote data center and waiting for a response. The processing, and often the data itself, never leaves your device.
Not yet for the largest, most complex tasks — cloud models generally have more computing power behind them. But for everyday tasks like text suggestions, photo editing, and voice commands, on-device models are now good enough that most people won't notice a meaningful gap.
It uses more power than doing nothing, but modern chips include dedicated neural processing units built specifically to run AI tasks efficiently, so it's far less draining than running the same model on general-purpose hardware.
Speed and privacy are the two big reasons — an on-device response doesn't wait on a network round trip, and sensitive data like messages or photos can be processed without ever being uploaded anywhere.
